Exhibitions

We see architecture exhibitions as a space for complex questions that do not have clear-cut answers, and for a living encounter with others. We treat the exhibition programme as a way to consistently explore less examined themes, phenomena, and figures, to build collaborative links between experts, researchers, curators, and practicing architects, and to share discoveries with audiences in Lithuania and abroad. We view the former Kaunas Central Post Office as a source of inspiration for rethinking and critically interpreting our relationship with modernist heritage, drawing on contemporary spatial practices and the tools of architecture, design, and art.

Programme

The National Institute of Architecture’s exhibition programme will comprise a range of projects designed for different audiences. In the renovated former Kaunas Central Post Office building, two main exhibition strands will be presented: on the ground floor, a long-term exhibition showcasing key items from the Institute’s collection and telling the story of Lithuania’s architectural development from the early 20th century to today through authentic artefacts; on the second floor, changing exhibitions that raise questions and invite discussion on topics important to the architectural field and professionals. The Institute will also present the history of the post office – as an institution, a city landmark, and an architectural object – and will introduce site-specific works of architecture, art, and design created by Lithuanian and international artists.
